EXCERPT FROM EVOLVING CURRICULUM

The term “Curriculum” is used to describe everything children do, see, hear, or feel in their setting, both planned and unplanned.

Children are unique individuals with their own social and personal skills and their own attitudes and likes and dislikes. Some children are quiet and some outgoing. Some are followers and some leaders. Many children will have already learnt a great deal by the time they are three years old. Many have already attended pre-school programs or child care. Many have already learned a great deal from their families. Children of this age are constantly encountering new experiences and seeking to understand them in order to extend their skills, develop confidence, and build on what they already know. They deepen their understanding by playing, talking, observing, planning, questioning, experimenting, testing, repeating, reflecting, and responding to adults and to each other.
